#GirlBoss: Jenifer Bemis; Metropolitan Design Group
Our next #GirlBoss feature is Jenifer Bemis; Metropolitan Design Group. She is a proud Kent State University graduate; a top-ranked school for interior design. Jenifer is the owner and lead designer of the firm and her work has taken her all over the US, as well as Canada. She is truly passionate about design and helping her clients make their visions a reality.
“A GirlBoss is…Someone who is in charge of her own life. She gets what she wants because she works for it. As a #GIRLBOSS, you take control and accept responsibility. You’re a fighter—you know when to throw punches and when to roll with them… Sometimes you break the rules, sometimes you follow them, but always on your own terms. You know where you’re going, but can’t do it without having some fun along the way. You value honesty over perfection. You ask questions. You take your life seriously, but you don’t take yourself too seriously. You’re going to take over the world, and change it in the process.”
Losing her job in 2001 hindered Jenifer’s rise to success. She decided to focus on an industry within interior design that would be minimally affected by economic downturn. She started her company as a funeral home interior designer with just $49 after incorporating! Jenifer became the sole interior designer for the second largest funeral home chain in the world, and later had the largest funeral home chain in the world.
Jenifer noted that the hardest part of her work was having enough capital to buy goods. This proved extremely hard when her career was put on hold after having spinal surgery and losing her biggest client, due to being unable to provide service. Like all GirlBosses though, Jenifer did not let that setback stop her from continuing to achieve her goals. She launched Metropolitan Design Group in 2002 and hasn’t looked back.
To Jenifer, ‘empowerment’ means trust. Her clients give her the power to make decisions for their homes and businesses, which is a wonderful feeling. Jenifer empowers other professionals by showing support through recommendations to other clients, and treating them how she would also like to be treated. She believes that the stronger we are as a team, the better we can service those who need us. Being a GirlBoss means that Jenifer is kicking a** and taking names! She combines her intelligence, ability to innovate, and quick-thinking to become a force to be reckoned with.
